Where We've Come From

A Brief History of Mount Pisgah Church

The first records of the church date back to 1845. In 1995, Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary of love and service to God and the people of Greensboro and surrounding areas.

The first building was a one-room wooden structure located approximately one-half mile west of the present site. Records suggest the building was relocated to the present site in the 1800s and remodeled in 1890. A brick sanctuary was built in 1914 which replaced the wooden structure.

The present sanctuary was built in 1968. The congregations of Bethel United Methodist Church and Mount Pisgah merged and worshipped together for the first time on June 7, 1970. Bethel Church records date back to 1907.

The Bethel Wing construction began in 1973 and provided space for classrooms, offices, and the fellowship hall. The wing was dedicated on January 7, 1974.

In 1988, the congregation responded to the increase of membership by enlarging the Herbert T. Penry Wing. The older classrooms were renovated, the music department was moved and enlarged, and a sacristy was added behind the sanctuary. The former music department was converted into offices for the Associate Ministers, the Educational Director, and Volunteer Office.

The real history of Mount Pisgah Church is a story of many pastors and lay persons worshipping together and responding to the love of Jesus Christ. Our church family has grown and now exceeds 1200 members. As we look to the future with continuing membership growth, the Mount Pisgah family strives to reflect our love of God and our dedicated service to all mankind.
